restauración

ES [restawɾaˈθjon] · Spanish for “restoration” · sounds like Czech restaurace

Czech ear hears restaurace - a restaurant Actually restauración - restoration, rebuilding

Restauración looks, to a Czech, like restaurace - a restaurant. It actually means restoration: repairing a building or a painting. The Spanish for the place you eat is restaurante.

Why it happens

Both appear to go back to Latin restaurare, “to restore.” Czech restaurace took the French route - a restaurant was originally a “restorative” broth, then the place that served it - and settled on the eatery. Spanish restauración kept the literal restoring: of a building, a painting, or a monarchy (la Restauración). The Spanish word for the eatery is restaurante, a syllable away - so a Czech who reads restauración as dinner is chasing the wrong kind of restoration.
